Demo Bed 2 - Rain Garden

What is a Rain Garden?

A rain garden is a shallow, landscaped area designed to capture, absorb, and filter rainwater runoff—typically from roofs, driveways, sidewalks, or streets—before it reaches storm drains or local waterways.

Instead of allowing water to rush off hard surfaces and carry pollutants with it, a rain garden slows the flow and allows it to soak naturally into the ground.

Key Features of a Rain Garden

  • Shallow basin that collects rainwater temporarily

  • Planted with native or adapted species that tolerate both wet and dry conditions

  • Amended soil mix to improve drainage, usually a blend of sand, compost, and topsoil

  • Designed to drain within 24 to 48 hours to avoid standing water and mosquito breeding

Benefits of a Rain Garden

  • Reduces water pollution by naturally filtering runoff

  • Helps prevent local flooding and erosion

  • Recharges groundwater supplies

  • Provides habitat for beneficial wildlife like pollinators and birds

  • Adds beauty and function to your landscape
